Hallowed Be Thy Name

Have you ever accidentally called God Dogg while praying? Or Dude or Bro? I did it today, totally by accident, and it surprised me. I decided it was OK, though I'd like to hear what you all think.

First some background. I started calling people Dogg as a self-mocking social commentary on my Whiteness. Those of you who know me would probably agree the irony is immediately evident. But soon I found words like Dogg and Dude quickly creep into every day language and soon are being used in totally inappropriate situations. If I had a dollar for every time I've called a boss or law school professor Dude I'd be a rich man. Today was, as far as I recall, the first time I used such a word as a reference for God in a direct communication with Him. Here is why I decided it was OK - perhaps more acceptable for God than for a boss or professor.

Dude is something you can call pretty much anybody. Dogg implies a certain familiarity or friendship. No one is a Dogg. Close friends can be my Dogg. See the distinction? Calling God Dogg implies that He is my Dogg, that I know Him well enough to use a term that implies closeness and familiarity and that I know He would be OK with it because He probably feels the same way about me.

Also, it implies that we are having a real conversation, not ritual-laden empty chatter. The fact that I used the word Dogg confirms that I was really talking to Him like I would a friend. And that has to be good. Any thoughts?
